The word ‘kundalini’ literally means ‘the curl of the lock of hair of the beloved.’ It is a metaphor, a poetic way of describing the flow of energy and consciousness that already exists within each one of us. In yogic teachings, kundalini is a force that can lie dormant at the base of the spine. We ‘raise our kundalini’ by awakening the flow of energy within the body through breathing exercises, movements, and focused awareness. The result varies for different people – some may literally feel physical flows of energy within the body, and some may just feel a lifting of spirits and lightness of being after practice. At its essence, the techniques in Kundalini Yoga help you to connect more deeply with yourself, and become more fully present and aware in each moment.
About three years ago I was introduced to the practice of Kundalini yoga. Having casually practiced Vinyasa, Yin, and Hatha forms of yoga, I was curious about the unique attributes of Kundalini yoga. During the first year of my graduate studies I was battling with waves of depression and was seeking holistic ways of healing myself. I began taking drop-in classes at Lotus Yoga Centre, originally located on Harbord Street in Toronto. One of my earliest memories during class was the moment I began to cry during a heart-opening exercise, where I was able to look within myself and visualize beautiful colours, patterns, and fragmented childhood memories. Leaving a 1.5 hour yoga class felt like leaving a powerful therapy session and a great gym work-out all at the same time.
I began to feel the power effects of Kundalini after I’ve established a more consistent practice, when Lotus Yoga Studio relocated to College Street. Feeling more focused, aligned, confident, and determined, I began to pay more attention to my intuition and my connection to the world around me. At times, I felt like I was seeing the world with a brand new set of eyes. All my senses were heightened and I began to understand that the energy I had awakened within me was very powerful and intelligent. My regular weekly practice was focused on core strength, the activation of the Third Chakra which governs our will power and inner strength. Once the Third Chakra is activated and balanced, it can be seamlessly connected to the Heart, making all my actions rooted in love. This is exactly what I needed. I would recommend Kundalini to anybody who is looking for an intense and rapidly effective form of healing.
